Air plants are becoming very popular houseplants due to their low maintenance needs. Although they are slow growers, air plants are easy to care for and have a unique life cycle that makes them even more interesting… and air plants flower if you treat them right!
The blooming phase is an important stage in the air plant’s life cycle as it marks the beginning of the reproductive process. During this phase, the plant produces an inflorescence which leads to the production of beautiful flowers of different colors.
The blooming period can vary in duration depending on the tillandsias type, ranging from several days to months. Blooming requires a lot of energy and is nature’s way of attracting insects and birds for pollination.
The factors that determine when an air plant will bloom include the environment, season, type, and maturity of the plant. But also, appropriate care is essential for blooming.
After blooming, the parent air plant produces pups which can be easily separated from the plant once they have grown to one-third of the size of the parent plant.
Caring for blooming air plants requires appropriate watering to avoid wetting the flower, following care instructions about light, temperature, and fertilizer, and being patient during the process. We recommend only misting them instead of showering them when they are in the blooming phase.
Air plants bloom only once in their lifetime, but the wait is worth it as the inflorescence produces beautiful and sometimes fragrant flowers. Enjoy the bloom when it comes and be looking forward to their next phase: propagation of pups.
